I just received a batch of herringbone purfling from China. It is the same dimension (1.5mm thick, about 1/4" wide) as the Stewmac one except the outer black line seems to be made of this rubbery material that seems a bit soft, almost sponge like. Obviously the rest of the purfling is wood/fiber but I find it curious that the outer line is rubber-like. The bonus seems to be that this purfling is quite flexible, you can bend it into any shape without heat. I'm just wondering if anyone has seen anything like this (it kinda feels like Zip Flex) and will it affect the final work? Initially I was thinking cheap Chinese quality but now I just wonder, perhaps they did it intentionally to make installation easier?

No, they are ready to go, no backfilling. They are not quite as flexible as these purflex (they look about as flexible as rope, and I don't mean the binding but real rope) but they're flexible enough that I should be able to bend it into a cutaway without heat. The stuff is like noodle out of the box already. The edge has a shiny coating and I feel I may need to use CA to glue it. I doubt any water based glue will work.

Tai .Ive seen these chinese suppliers on e vil bay and was wondering how good these herringbone purf/bindings were.Would you mind sharing your experience using this stuff ?I /d use a backer veneer .022 and maybe line the channel with some#1 cut shellac along the edge in case there is potential bleed through from the fiber into your spruce top. Then seal again once you finished scraping, with shellac. If using CA I would cut a test rabbett on scrap and run through the whole process first before doing the entire gtr.
